Financial Controller
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Financial Controller to join the Senior Leadership Team of a growing, privately owned organisation operating within a project-led environment.
Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you will take full ownership of the finance function, providing accurate financial reporting, commercial insight, and strategic support to drive business performance and sustainable growth.
This is a hands-on leadership role that combines financial control, operational support, and strategic planning, making it an excellent opportunity for an ambitious finance professional who enjoys working closely with senior stakeholders and influencing key business decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Control
- Lead the finance function, ensuring robust financial controls, governance, and compliance.
- Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with business objectives.
- Oversee statutory and regulatory obligations, including VAT, payroll, taxation, and industry-specific compliance requirements.
- Manage relationships with external advisers, banking partners, insurers, and auditors.
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting across the business.
Financial Planning & Analysis
- Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and longer-term financial planning processes.
- Produce monthly management accounts and board-level reporting.
- Deliver meaningful financial analysis and commentary to support decision-making.
- Provide commercial insight to improve profitability, operational efficiency, and business performance.
- Support senior leaders with financial modelling and strategic planning.
Cash Flow & Risk Management
- Manage cash flow, working capital, and treasury activities.
- Monitor financial performance against budgets and forecasts.
- Identify financial risks and implement appropriate mitigation strategies.
- Review opportunities for funding, grants, and industry-related incentives where appropriate.
Payroll, Systems & Compliance
- Oversee payroll processes, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
- Ensure employee benefits, taxation, and related reporting requirements are managed effectively.
- Take ownership of finance systems, reporting tools, and process improvements.
- Support wider operational systems and business infrastructure where required.
- Manage insurance arrangements and annual renewals.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team.
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and high performance.
- Build strong relationships across all areas of the business.
- Act as a trusted advisor to the Senior Leadership Team.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Essential
- Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA).
- Demonstrable experience as a Financial Controller, Head of Finance, or similar senior finance role.
- Experience working within a project-based, contracting, engineering, construction, or operational environment.
- Strong understanding of financial controls, management reporting, budgeting, and forecasting.
- Experience managing cash flow, profitability analysis, and operational performance reporting.
- Proven ability to partner with senior stakeholders and influence decision-making.
- Strong systems knowledge, including finance software and Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work independently while taking ownership of the finance function.
Desirable
- Payroll qualification or payroll oversight experience.
- Experience managing subcontractor or contractor payment processes and associated compliance requirements.
- Knowledge of project costing, contract profitability, and operational performance metrics.
