About the Role
Butler Rose are exclusively working with our client to recruit an experienced and commercially minded Financial Controller to join their growing business.
This is a hands-on senior finance role with responsibility across financial control, management reporting, cash flow, working capital, payroll and the financial management of international purchasing and import activity.
The successful candidate will play a key role in overseeing the day-to-day finance function and supporting the wider business with accurate financial information, commercial insight and effective financial controls.
The ideal candidate will be commercially focused, highly organised and comfortable operating in a fast-paced trading environment where accuracy, strong financial controls and the ability to meet tight deadlines are essential.
Experience within a business importing products from overseas, particularly from Asian and other international markets, would be highly advantageous.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Control & Reporting
- Take ownership of the day-to-day financial control of the business.
- Prepare accurate monthly management accounts and financial reports.
- Ensure month-end processes are completed accurately and within agreed deadlines.
- Monitor budgets, margins, expenditure and overall financial performance.
- Provide clear financial analysis and insight to senior management.
- Identify financial risks, discrepancies and opportunities for improvement.
- Maintain robust accounting procedures and financial controls.
- Support senior management with commercially relevant financial information and analysis.
Cash Flow & Working Capital
- Prepare and maintain accurate short- and medium-term cash flow forecasts.
- Monitor daily and weekly cash positions and future funding requirements.
- Manage and optimise working capital across stock, debtors and creditors.
- Monitor supplier payments and customer receipts.
- Identify opportunities to improve cash conversion and liquidity.
- Provide regular cash flow and working capital reporting to senior management.
International Purchasing & Import Finance
- Oversee the financial aspects of international purchasing and import activity.
- Calculate and monitor accurate landed costs, including purchase prices, freight, insurance, duties, customs charges, transport and associated costs.
- Ensure landed costs are correctly reflected in product margins and management accounts.
- Reconcile supplier invoices, shipping documentation and import-related costs.
- Work closely with purchasing, logistics and senior management to ensure accurate product costing.
- Monitor overseas supplier balances and international payment commitments.
Payroll & Financial Administration
- Oversee and/or process monthly payroll, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time.
- Maintain accurate payroll records, deductions, pension contributions and statutory requirements.
- Liaise with external accountants, auditors, banks and professional advisers as required.
- Monitor VAT, tax and other financial obligations and ensure deadlines are met.
About You
We are looking for a commercially focused and hands-on finance professional who is confident taking ownership of a finance function and working closely with senior management.
You will ideally have:
- Proven experience as a Financial Controller or in a similar senior finance role.
- Strong experience preparing management accounts and financial reports.
- Excellent knowledge of cash flow forecasting and working capital management.
- Experience within an importing, trading or international purchasing environment.
- Understanding of landed costs and international supplier payments.
- Payroll experience.
- Strong Excel skills and confidence working with financial/accounting systems.
- Excellent attention to detail and a high level of numerical accuracy.
- The ability to work effectively under pressure and consistently meet tight deadlines.
- Strong commercial awareness, with the ability to turn financial information into practical business decisions.
- The confidence to challenge figures, processes and decisions where appropriate.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with directors and senior management.
