Butler Rose is delighted to be recruiting on behalf of a well-established and innovative manufacturing business based in Plymouth. Due to continued growth and investment in new product development, our client is seeking an experienced Design Engineer to join their engineering team.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the design and development of industry-leading products used by globally recognised technology businesses. You'll work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, taking projects from initial concept through to production while collaborating with a range of internal teams and customers.

The Role

As a Design Engineer, you will be involved throughout the full product development lifecycle, supporting both new product introduction (NPI) projects and enhancements to existing product ranges.

Key responsibilities include:

Creating 3D models, concepts and detailed 2D production drawings for sheet metal components, weldments and assemblies.Supporting new product development and continuous product improvement projects.Leading and contributing to design reviews with internal stakeholders and customers.Managing customer expectations and providing technical design expertise.Ensuring designs meet manufacturing, quality, performance and cost requirements.Driving continuous improvement initiatives and engineering problem-solving activities.Working closely with engineering, production, procurement and commercial teams to deliver successful projects.About You

We are keen to hear from candidates who have:

A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.At least three years' experience in a design engineering position.Strong CAD experience, ideally with Creo (or similar 3D CAD software).Experience working with sheet metal and fabricated product design.Knowledge of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) within a production environment.Experience with tolerance analysis and D-FMEA methodologies.Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Desirable experience includes:

This is a fantastic opportunity for a driven planning professional to take ownership of production planning activities, lead a small team, and play a key role in improving operational performance across the business.

The Role

Reporting into senior leadership, you will be responsible for managing production planning processes end-to-end, ensuring efficient schedules, strong customer delivery performance, and continuous improvement across planning systems and processes.

Key responsibilities will include:

Translating demand and capacity requirements into achievable production plansManaging and optimising planning and scheduling systems (MRP / ERP)Monitoring capacity, identifying bottlenecks, and driving improvements in outputWorking closely with production, procurement, and stores teams to ensure alignmentAnalysing BOMs to support make vs buy decisionsSupporting cost estimation and quoting through material and labour analysisLeading, coaching, and developing the production planning teamDriving improvements through KPI tracking and data-led decision makingEnsuring data accuracy across planning systems and processes

The Role

As Senior Process Engineer, you will take ownership of critical manufacturing processes within the sheet metal area, ensuring new products, equipment and improvements are delivered to world‑class standards.

You'll work across NPI, continuous improvement initiatives and live production support, playing a central role in driving performance, capability and efficiency while helping to embed a strong continuous improvement culture across the factory.

This role would suit a proactive, technically strong engineer who enjoys solving problems, leading improvement projects and influencing stakeholders at all levels.

Key Responsibilities

Process Ownership & Performance

Take full ownership of defined manufacturing processes within the sheet metal departmentLead successful introduction of new products and equipment, ensuring capability and quality targets are metDeliver engineering projects on time, within budget and in line with health & safety and quality standardsProvide hands-on production support to optimise tooling, equipment utilisation and material flow

Leadership & Coaching

Act as a role model, demonstrating professionalism, accountability and high engineering standardsSupport and coach junior engineers and team membersPromote a strong culture of safety, quality and continuous improvement

Continuous Improvement & Technical Delivery

Drive process optimisation using lean principles and structured problem-solving techniquesTroubleshoot technical issues to reduce waste and improve quality and throughputMaintain high standards across standard work, PFMEAs, layouts, line balancing and process capability

Cross-Functional Working

Collaborate closely with Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, Production and Supply Chain teamsContribute technical insight during NPI and design review activitiesParticipate in root cause analysis, improvement workshops and problem-solving activities

About You

We welcome applications from a wide range of backgrounds. To be successful, you are likely to demonstrate:

HNC Level 4 or above in Manufacturing or Mechanical EngineeringDegree in Industrial Engineering and/or Lean Six Sigma certification (desirable)At least 5 years' experience in a senior or lead engineering role within manufacturingStrong experience of sheet metal processes, including jig design and welding/weld jigsProven track record in delivering manufacturing projects, layout redesigns and process improvementsExperience working with contractors, supplier negotiation and equipment procurement

Technical & Professional Skills

Manufacturing systems, process engineering and project managementCAD and planning softwareLean manufacturing, TPM, OEE, automation and smart manufacturingEquipment validation and machine safety standardsRoot cause analysis and data-driven decision makingStrong communication, stakeholder management and leadership skillsStrategic planning, budgeting and change management
