Butler Rose is delighted to be recruiting on behalf of a well-established and highly respected engineering manufacturer based in Plymouth. This organisation supplies specialist solutions to global technology leaders and is experiencing continued growth driven by strong demand from the data centre and digital infrastructure sectors.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Design Engineer to play a key role in the development of advanced sheet metal cabinet solutions used in hyperscale data centre environments.

The Role

As a Senior Design Engineer, you will take ownership of the full product design lifecycle - from concept through to production. You will work closely with customers and internal teams to develop high-performance engineered solutions that meet strict technical, quality, and manufacturing requirements.

This role offers the chance to contribute to complex, high-value projects while influencing product development, design standards, and continuous improvement across the engineering function.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the full lifecycle design and development of precision sheet metal products and assemblies.

  • Translate complex customer requirements into detailed 3D CAD models, technical drawings, and engineering documentation.

  • Collaborate with project management, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and delivered on schedule.

  • Support prototype builds, testing, and product validation activities.

  • Participate in and lead design reviews with internal stakeholders and customers.

  • Drive continuous improvement across engineering processes, design tools, and product standards.

  • Ensure accurate engineering data integration within ERP systems.

  • Provide technical guidance and support across multidisciplinary teams.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will bring strong mechanical design experience within a manufacturing or engineering environment, ideally involving sheet metal products.

Key Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).

  • Approximately 10+ years' experience in mechanical design.

  • Strong background in sheet metal design and manufacturing processes.

  • Experience working in design office environments supporting production.

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (ideally Creo or Inventor, though others will be considered).

  • Experience engaging directly with customers and leading technical design reviews.

  • Strong understanding of design for manufacture (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA).

  • Knowledge of DFMEA and tolerance analysis.

Desirable

  • Experience with structural analysis or FEA.

  • Exposure to electrical or thermal management design.

You will also demonstrate strong problem-solving ability, excellent communication skills, and a proactive approach to driving engineering improvements.
