A well-established and growing accountancy practice is seeking a Financial Controller to take ownership of its internal finance function. This is a hands-on, pivotal role suited to a practical and commercially aware finance professional who enjoys working within a team environment while delivering accurate reporting, maintaining strong controls, and supporting strategic decision-making.
Role Responsibilities
- Produce monthly management accounts, including P&L, balance sheet reconciliations, and cashflow reporting.
- Manage the month-end process, ensuring accuracy and timely close.
- Prepare year-end schedules and support with statutory accounts.
- Support budgeting processes and provide clear variance analysis.
- Monitor and manage cashflow, identifying and escalating risks where necessary.
- Oversee billing, credit control, and debtor management, liaising with internal stakeholders.
- Process supplier invoices and manage payment runs, including direct debits.
- Maintain relationships with banks and key suppliers.
- Ensure robust financial controls, reconciliations, and compliance with HMRC requirements.
- Prepare VAT returns, payroll inputs, and other compliance-related tasks.
- Manage purchase ledger processes, including invoice matching, coding, and supplier queries.
- Line manage and support the Finance Administrator, including covering their duties when required.
- Drive improvements in finance systems, processes, and reporting efficiency.
- Provide clear financial insight to support business decisions, including basic modelling and profitability analysis.
Personal Requirements
- Part-qualified, newly qualified (ACCA/CIMA/ACA) or qualified by experience.
- Strong experience producing management accounts and managing cashflow.
- Hands-on approach.
- Solid understanding of financial controls, reconciliations, and compliance.
- Advanced Excel skills (including VLOOKUP) and experience with Xero.
- Confident communicator with the ability to work closely with senior stakeholders.
- Experience managing or mentoring junior staff.
- Recent experience within a UK practice environment.
- Exposure to budgeting, forecasting, or system/process improvements (desirable).
- Familiarity with IRIS or similar systems (desirable).
- Highly organised, detail-oriented, and proactive with a continuous improvement mindset.
