Financial Controller

Manchester | Up to £75,000 | Full-Time | Permanent

We are recruiting for an experienced and fully qualified Financial Controller to join a growing, construction project-led business in Manchester.

Reporting directly to the Finance Director, you will take ownership of the monthly accounts process, financial controls, statutory compliance and project reporting. This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially minded accountant who enjoys working autonomously and making a real impact within the finance function.

The Role

Prepare monthly management accounts, including P&L, balance sheet and month-end journals.Own the month-end close process and maintain robust financial controls.Complete and review all key balance sheet reconciliations.Produce cash flow forecasts, budgets and variance analysis.Support project accounting, cost tracking and profitability reporting.Prepare VAT returns and manage HMRC correspondence.Assist with statutory accounts preparation and year-end audit requirements.Monitor debtor and creditor positions, providing meaningful financial insight to management.

About You

Fully qualified ACA, ACCA or CIMA.Strong experince of CISPrevious experience in a Management Accountant or similar role.Strong month-end and management accounts experience.Excellent reconciliation and financial control skills.Experience preparing VAT returns and managing compliance requirements.Sage experience is essential.Confident communicator with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

Desirable

Experience within construction, engineering or another project-based environment.Knowledge of project accounting and cost reporting.Experience using Eque2 or a similar ERP system.Previous involvement in audit and statutory accounts preparation.

THE ROLE

Processing end-to-end payrolls for a portfolio of clients across varying pay cyclesManaging auto-enrolment duties and BACS paymentsEnsuring payrolls are completed accurately, efficiently and within deadlinesEstablishing and maintaining strong working relationships with clientsHandling payroll-related queries and providing a high standard of client serviceCarrying out manual payroll calculations where requiredKeeping up to date with payroll legislation, HMRC requirements and industry changesLiaising with HMRC, pension providers and other third-party organisationsWorking collaboratively with the wider payroll team and supporting shared service standardsProactively resolving payroll and client service issuesSupporting continuous improvement across payroll processes and service deliveryUndertaking any additional duties appropriate to the role


CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should ideally demonstrate:

Previous payroll experience, ideally gained within an accountancy practice, bureau or payroll services environmentStrong understanding of payroll legislation, statutory payments and auto-enrolment regulationsExperience processing multiple client payrollsAbility to manually calculate payrollGood working knowledge of payroll software Experience using BrightPay would be highly advantageous Strong Microsoft Office skillsExcellent communication and interpersonal skillsStrong organisational and time management abilityA proactive, positive and client-focused approachAbility to work both independently and as part of a team
