Butler Rose is delighted to be recruiting on behalf of a well-established and innovative manufacturing business based in Plymouth. Due to continued growth and investment in new product development, our client is seeking an experienced Design Engineer to join their engineering team.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the design and development of industry-leading products used by globally recognised technology businesses. You'll work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, taking projects from initial concept through to production while collaborating with a range of internal teams and customers.
The RoleAs a Design Engineer, you will be involved throughout the full product development lifecycle, supporting both new product introduction (NPI) projects and enhancements to existing product ranges.
Key responsibilities include:
Creating 3D models, concepts and detailed 2D production drawings for sheet metal components, weldments and assemblies.Supporting new product development and continuous product improvement projects.Leading and contributing to design reviews with internal stakeholders and customers.Managing customer expectations and providing technical design expertise.Ensuring designs meet manufacturing, quality, performance and cost requirements.Driving continuous improvement initiatives and engineering problem-solving activities.Working closely with engineering, production, procurement and commercial teams to deliver successful projects.About YouWe are keen to hear from candidates who have:
A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.At least three years' experience in a design engineering position.Strong CAD experience, ideally with Creo (or similar 3D CAD software).Experience working with sheet metal and fabricated product design.Knowledge of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) within a production environment.Experience with tolerance analysis and D-FMEA methodologies.Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.Desirable experience includes:

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Design Engineer to play a key role in the development of advanced sheet metal cabinet solutions used in hyperscale data centre environments.
The RoleAs a Senior Design Engineer, you will take ownership of the full product design lifecycle - from concept through to production. You will work closely with customers and internal teams to develop high-performance engineered solutions that meet strict technical, quality, and manufacturing requirements.
This role offers the chance to contribute to complex, high-value projects while influencing product development, design standards, and continuous improvement across the engineering function.
Key ResponsibilitiesLead the full lifecycle design and development of precision sheet metal products and assemblies.
Translate complex customer requirements into detailed 3D CAD models, technical drawings, and engineering documentation.
Collaborate with project management, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and delivered on schedule.
Support prototype builds, testing, and product validation activities.
Participate in and lead design reviews with internal stakeholders and customers.
Drive continuous improvement across engineering processes, design tools, and product standards.
Ensure accurate engineering data integration within ERP systems.
Provide technical guidance and support across multidisciplinary teams.
About YouTo be successful in this role, you will bring strong mechanical design experience within a manufacturing or engineering environment, ideally involving sheet metal products.
Key Requirements
Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
Approximately 10+ years' experience in mechanical design.
Strong background in sheet metal design and manufacturing processes.
Experience working in design office environments supporting production.
Proficiency in 3D CAD software (ideally Creo or Inventor, though others will be considered).
Experience engaging directly with customers and leading technical design reviews.
Strong understanding of design for manufacture (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA).
Knowledge of DFMEA and tolerance analysis.
Desirable
Experience with structural analysis or FEA.
Exposure to electrical or thermal management design.
You will also demonstrate strong problem-solving ability, excellent communication skills, and a proactive approach to driving engineering improvements.
