An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Assistant Accountant to join the finance team of a large and highly successful business at their Head Office in Plymouth. This role will see you take responsibility for several cost centres - ensuring all expenditure is accurately recorded and reported in a timely manner.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong organisational skills, great attention to detail, and a passion for financial accuracy to join a well-established organisation with a supportive and collaborative working culture.
Key ResponsibilitiesTake ownership of a selection of cost centres and balance sheet codes
Post and evidence monthly accruals, prepayments and other journals as required
Analyse costs versus budgets and communicate key variances to the Finance Manager team
Process company expenses and credit card expenditure
Code expenditure invoices via the data capture system, ensuring payment deadlines are met
Conduct aged creditor reviews and supplier statement reconciliations
Support budgeting and reforecasting activities
Play a key role in meeting month-end and year-end deadlines
Undertake ad-hoc finance tasks as required
Skills & RequirementsFinancial qualification (AAT or equivalent) preferred
Previous experience within a similar finance or accounts role
Excellent communication and analytical skills
Strong organisational abilities and attention to detail
Confident IT user with intermediate to advanced Excel skills

About the Role
Butler Rose are delighted to be supporting our client in the recruitment of an Accounts Assistant to join their busy finance team. This varied position will see you play a key role in supporting both the Purchase Ledger and Credit Control functions, ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of financial operations.
You will assist with processing supplier invoices, managing payments, and reconciling accounts, whilst also taking responsibility for calculating rebates, raising sales invoices, and maintaining accurate debtor records. Key Responsibilities:
Purchase Ledger duties including processing supplier invoices and credit notes, matching, batching, and coding.
Ensuring all invoices are authorised in line with company policy.
Reconciling supplier statements and resolving any discrepancies.
Preparing payment runs and supporting monthly BACS processing.
Assisting with month-end reporting and accruals.
Calculating supplier turnover rebates and processing self-billing retros.
Raising property and commission sales invoices.
Proactively chasing aged debtors and resolving queries promptly.
Accurately allocating incoming receipts and maintaining clean ledgers.
Supporting the wider finance team with ad hoc tasks as required.
About You:
Previous experience in a similar Accounts or Finance role is essential.
Solid understanding of both Purchase Ledger and Credit Control processes.
Confident user of Microsoft Excel and general finance systems.
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Able to work well both independently and as part of a team.
AAT qualification (or currently studying) would be advantageous.

Working within this team of 4, and reporting directly to the Finance Director you will be responsible for the following duties:
Prepare Monthly Management Accounts and Year-End AccountsFinancial analysis and reporting - supporting the improvement of internal controls
Identifying areas for improvement of process and procedureMaintain the Fixed Asset Register and depreciation schedules
Balance sheet reconciliations - stock, prepayments, and accruals
Post and review journals
Bank reconciliations
Manage and maintain lease agreements
Prepare cash flow forecasts and reports for the Finance Director
Manage invoice discounting and perform bank reconciliations in Sage
Carrying out review and analysis projects to identify cost-saving opportunities
Oversee credit control and manage customer relationships
Raise and reconcile invoices
Reconcile supplier accounts and prepare weekly/monthly payments
Manage the invoice approval process, ensuring accurate coding and compliance
Import payroll data files from the external bureau into Sage 50 Accounts
Perform year end payroll calculations at year end (holiday etc)Who are we looking for:
You will be ideally ACCA or CIMA qualified and at a minimum a studying finalistHave proven experience in an SME environment with hands-on, varied responsibility across the full finance function
Strong technical accounting knowledge and excellent Excel and Sage 50 skills
A proactive problem-solver who thrives on improving systems and controls
Confident communicator, able to work closely with senior management and external stakeholders
