Butler Rose are delighted to be working with an independent accountancy firm in Blackburn looking to recruit a skilled Payroll Manager.

This is a stand-a-lone role managing a busy payroll function for a varied client base, offering autonomy and the opportunity to make a real impact.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The firm processes payroll for over 160 clients and 730+ employees each month. You will take full ownership of the payroll function, ensuring accurate, timely and compliant payrolls while providing an excellent service to clients. The team is friendly, collaborative, and supportive, with a culture that values proactive advice and continuous learning.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Managing the full payroll life-cycle for all clients, including weekly, monthly, and four-weekly payrollsActing as key contact for client payroll enquiries and HMRC/pension organisation queriesSetting up new payroll clients, PAYE schemes, and pensionsProcessing new starters, leavers, and CIS submissionsProducing and distributing payroll reports to clientsMaintaining up-to-date knowledge of payroll legislation and best practiceImproving systems to ensure payroll processes run efficientlyReporting to the Practice Manager and assisting with ad-hoc duties

ABOUT YOU

CIPP qualified (preferred)At least 5 years' senior payroll/bureau experienceConfident managing a full payroll function autonomouslyStrong knowledge of payroll legislation and complianceExcellent client communication skillsProficient with BrightPay (training available if needed)Highly organised, with strong attention to detailProactive approach with the confidence to work in a stand-a-lone role

THE ROLE

The Payroll Manager will take responsibility for managing end-to-end payroll services for a diverse portfolio of clients, ensuring payrolls are processed accurately and in line with current legislation and deadlines.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Managing multiple client payrolls from start to finish across weekly, monthly, and quarterly cyclesEnsuring payroll submissions are completed accurately and on timeOverseeing pension auto-enrolment processes and BACS submissionsActing as a key point of contact for payroll-related queries and client supportHandling statutory payments, deductions, and manual calculations where requiredLiaising with HMRC and external providers regarding payroll mattersSupporting and mentoring junior members of the payroll teamMonitoring compliance with payroll legislation and HMRC regulationsAssisting with process improvements and maintaining high service standards across the payroll functionBuilding and maintaining strong client relationships through a professional and responsive approach


CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should ideally demonstrate:

Previous experience within a payroll bureau, accountancy practice, or payroll services environmentStrong understanding of payroll legislation, statutory payments, and pension auto-enrolmentExperience managing multiple payrolls simultaneouslyConfidence dealing with complex payroll calculations and queriesExcellent communication and organisational skillsA proactive and client-focused approachGood working knowledge of payroll software and Microsoft OfficeExperience with BrightPay would be beneficial but is not essentialCIPP qualification desirable, though not essential
